The Honor View 20 global launch is taking place on 22 January 2019 and it’s coming to Malaysia very soon. Ahead of the big event, we managed to get a short preview of the device.
Apart from having an in-screen selfie camera, one of the biggest features is its 48MP rear shooter. To give you a better idea of its performance, we got some sample daytime shots to share.
To recap on the specs, the Honor View 20 uses a 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor that has a 1/2.0″ sensor size and it has an aperture of f/1.8. Similar to Huawei, it also gets AI assistance to enhance its camera capabilities. In low light situations, the camera can combine four nearby pixels to increase its pixel size from 0.8 micron to 1.6 micron. This also means that it brings down its effective pixels from 48MP to 12MP.
The images on the left were taken with AI enabled while the right images were shot without AI. You may click on each image below for a bigger view. It is recommended that you view this on a desktop computer.
One of the noticeable differences is that AI enhances the brightness of the overall photo. The trees and plants get a noticeable boost in colour when its AI scene detection switches to greenery mode.
However, if you look closer at 100% crop, surprisingly, the non-AI image appears to be sharper than the one that’s shot with AI enabled. It seems that Honor’s AI engine is configured differently from Huawei. On the Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro, you can see added sharpening on the photos when AI is enabled.
Over at the front, the Honor View 20 has a 25MP f/2.0 selfie camera that’s placed on the top left corner of the screen. Below are sample selfies taken with and without AI enabled.
What do you think of the Honor View 20’s camera? Let us know in the comments below. We’ll definitely try to do a full camera comparison with other smartphones once we get a unit.
