HTC’s new budget smartphone has a weird camera bump

After introducing the HTC U12 Life a few months ago, HTC has just announced the Desire 12s. This is supposedly a cheaper version of the Desire 12 but it borrows some design elements from the U12 Life series.

In terms of design, the rear camera bump looks pretty odd. At a glance, it looks like a dual-camera setup but it’s actually a single camera with an accompanying LED flash. Instead of the typical placement on the top left corner, the camera bump looks out of place which could be infuriating to look at by those with OCD.

The bottom half of the device has textured lines which should provide a more grippy feel similar to the HTC U12 Life. There’s also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor and the device also support NFC.

Spec-wise it is an entry-level affair with a 5.7″ display that pushes a HD+ resolution of 1440×720 pixels in an 18:9 aspect ratio. Powering the device is a Snapdragon 435 processor that comes in either 3GB RAM + 32GB storage or 4GB RAM + 64GB storage.

The back gets a 13MP f/2.0 PDAF main camera while the front comes with a 13MP f/2.2 selfie camera that has its own LED soft light. Juicing up the Desire 12s is a 3,075mAh battery and it still charges via microUSB and it appears that HTC is bundling a slow 5V1A charger. Out of the box, it still runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with HTC Sense skin on top.

In Taiwan, the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage version is going for TWD 5,990 (about RM811) while the higher spec 4GB RAM + 64GB storage variant is priced at TWD 6,990 (about RM947). With that pricing, the Desire 12s is looking out of place as there are more competitive mid-range options that can offer better specs for the same price.
