Apple puts last year’s iPhone X back into production according to report

After a recent report that Apple’s iPhone sales were slower than expected, it appears that the Cupertino company will be restarting production of last year’s iPhone X.  The iPhone X was discontinued officially after the introduction of the new iPhone XS, XS Max and iPhone XR

The iPhone X is back

Apparently, the iPhone X is making its return in order to fulfil contract requirements with Samsung Display. Apple is said to have a minimum order obligation for its OLED panels.

With WSJ’s claim that demand for iPhone XS and XS Max is slow, putting the iPhone X back on the shelves makes sense as it’s still quite popular especially with ongoing discounts. However, these new production units are said to be available only at selected markets.

This isn’t the first time Apple has brought back a discontinued model into production. Not too long ago, Apple had reintroduced the iPhone 6 in our market as their new “entry-level” device and they have also bumped the base storage from 16GB to 32GB. It was rumoured that demand for the smaller iPhone SE was dwindling as consumers prefer a device with a larger screen and that’s where the iPhone 6 fits in.

Apple to offer discounts for iPhone XR

WSJ also reported that Apple will begin offering price cuts for the iPhone XR in Japan. It that market, it seems that consumers prefer last year’s iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus over the XR.

It isn’t uncommon to see Apple offering price reductions through authorised retailers in order to boost sales. At one point, Apple authorised retailers in Malaysia had offered a RM500 discount for all 128GB and 256GB versions of the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus. Earlier this year, retailers had also offered the iPhone X 256GB at the price of a 64GB version.

If the iPhone X is back on sale officially for less than RM4,000, would you consider it over the iPhone XR and iPhone XS? Let us know in the comments below.
