PLUS is starting its own RFID Public Pilot Test

RFID is a new way to pay for highway tolls and this will eventually replace the current SmartTAG. Apart from Touch ‘n Go, PLUS, the concessionaire for the Malaysian North-South Expressway is also kicking off its own RFID Public Pilot test in Penang and Kedah.

According to their website, PLUS RFID uses an open payment system unlike Touch ‘n Go’s RFID that uses an eWallet. This means you can link your PLUS RFID to your bank account or preferred debit or credit card. As a result, you won’t have to worry about topping up a separate wallet as the toll charges will be deducted directly from your preferred mode of payment.

PLUS RFID’s Public Pilot test will begin on 15 December 2018 and it will be available only at the four toll plazas listed below:

  1. Plaza Tol Jambatan Pulau Pinang
  2. Plaza Tol Kubang Semang (BKE)
  3. Plaza Tol Lunas (BKE)
  4. Plaza Tol Jitra

The PLUS RFID tag is offered free of charge and it will be installed on either your car’s windscreen or headlamp. According to the PLUS RFID FAQ, there are only two fitment centres that are located at Penang Bridge Toll Plaza and at N3 Kubang Semang.

Interestingly, existing Touch ‘n Go RFID users are able to use the same RFID lanes except for the Penang Bridge Toll Plaza. If the RFID payment fails during the trial, you can use your physical Touch ‘n Go card as a backup.

If you’re interested to give PLUS RFID a try, you can leave your mobile number and email address on their RFID page. In case you missed it, Touch ‘n Go is opening up more slots for its second phase of Public Pilot program in the Klang Valley.
