You can now enable e-SIM on Xiaomi smartphones in Malaysia

Need a secondary SIM card for your Xiaomi smartphone but don’t want to fiddle around with physical cards and ejector tool? Xiaomi has just announced that you can enable e-SIM on their smartphones in Malaysia.  This covers a variety of models including the Mi 8, POCOPHONE F1 and even the Redmi 4A

With e-SIM, you no longer need a physical card as it uses an embedded SIM to identify itself with a telco. In Malaysia, Xiaomi is collaborating with Durian Man to provide this e-SIM service. The e-SIM feature is already supported on the Mi 8, POCOPHONE F1, Mi MIX 2S, Redmi Note 6 Pro, Mi Max 3, Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite.

It is also possible to enable e-SIM on the Redmi Note 4X, Redmi 4A, Redmi Note 5A Prime, Redmi Note 5A, Redmi 5A, Redmi 4X, Redmi 5, Redmi Note 5, Redmi 5 Plus and Redmi Note 4. However, you’ll need to download the Durian Man app from the Google Play Store and the device needs to be running on MIUI 9.6 or later.

To activate the e-SIM, you have to go to one of the five authorised Mi Stores located at KLCC, Pavilion, Mid Valley, One Utama and IOI City Mall in Putrajaya.

For local data, Durian Man offers the following monthly options:
4GB data + 60 minutes of calls – RM14.15
8GB data + 500 minutes of calls – RM28
16GB data + 1,000 minutes of calls – RM45
128GB data – RM200

From the screenshots provided on the Google Play Store, there’s also a RM1/day plan with 300MB of data and RM9/week option with 2GB of data.

You can also use the e-SIM to stay connected overseas. At the moment, they have revealed its unlimited roaming option in Singapore for RM8, Thailand at RM5 and Japan at RM10. For Hong Kong and China, roaming costs RM3. Although it says unlimited, it appears that speeds will be throttled once you’ve hit a certain limit.

According to Mi Malaysia, this e-SIM service is currently offered as a pilot test in the Klang Valley and they will expand to other states at a later time. They also added that Durian Man e-SIM offers nationwide coverage on Celcom’s network.

Take note that you can only have two SIMs running at the same time. This means if you enable an e-SIM, you can only use one physical SIM card at the same time. For more info, hit the source link.
