Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S & GLC 63 S Coupé launched in Malaysia. 4-litre biturbo V8, 510hp and RM900k++

Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S and GLC 63 S Coupé are now available in Malaysia, and calling these two beasts high performance is an understatement. The GLC 63 S and GLC 63 S Coupé both get the same AMG-engineered 4.0-litre biturbo V8 engine pushing out 510 hp and 700 Nm. In both cars, 0-100km/h is despatched in just 3.8 seconds. Top speed is a staggering electronically limited 270km/h.

As per tradition, each AMG engine is assembled from start to finish by hand by one mechanic. Mercedes calls it the “one man — one engine principle”. In terms of price, well…if you have to ask, you can’t really afford it but so you know, the GLC 63 S is — are you ready for it — RM915,888 while the GLC 63 S Coupé is RM933,888 AND eighty sen (OTR without insurance).

Now back to the cars….

A characteristic feature of the 4-litre V8 is that the two turbochargers are positioned not on the outside of the cylinder banks, but rather in between the cylinder “V”. This makes for a more compact engine design, optimal engine response and low exhaust gas emissions.

To the deliver all that power onto the road, the cars feature the AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 9-speed transmission, as first seen in the Mercedes-AMG E 63 4MATIC+. The gearbox delivers short response times, fast multiple downshifts and is capable of auto-blipping during downshifts for a more in-control feel when driving. A start-off wet clutch replaces the torque converter which saves weight and improves on accelerator input response time particularly on acceleration and during engine load changes.

Both cars come with AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs giving the driver four distinct drive mode — “Comfort”, “Sport”, “Sport Plus” and “Individual” — with Individual being a customisable mode allowing you to fine-tune the characteristics of the car to suit your driving style.

The drive modes allow you to alter key parameters, such as engine response, transmission, suspension, steering, ESP and all-wheel drive. In addition and independent of the DYNAMIC SELECT drive programs, you also have has the option to operate the gearbox in full manual mode via the shift paddles on the steering wheel.

The pièce de résistance of the GLC 63 S and the GLC 63 S Coupé is of course the exhaust note. It’s a growly, raspy almost menacing tone courtesy of an exhaust system with flap technology. The system is controlled by a map and automatically operated depending on the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT drive program you’ve selected, the power demanded by the driver and the engine speed. If that’s not enough, you can opt for the optional Performance exhaust system, which allows you to change the exhaust note at the press of a button.

In terms of design and aesthetics, the GLC 63 is the first Mercedes-AMG vehicle to feature the Panamericana grille — a feature that was once previously reserved only for the AMG GT family of sports cars. In addition to that, the cars also get a wide front apron inspired by the design of a jet wing, with a large front splitter just to confirm that this car means business. The AMG Night package in high-gloss black and the matte black 21-inch AMG cross-spoke forged wheels complete the controlled aggression look of both the cars.

On the inside you get Nappa leather for the sports seats and ARTICO man-made leather in black nappa for the dashboard and beltlines, as well as the red designo seat belts.
