You can skip the queue and renew your Malaysian passport online

Renewing your Malaysian passport is fairly quick these days. You can pop in your nearest immigration office or Urban Transformation Centre (UTC), and you can walk out with a new passport in just a few hours. 

However, did you know that you can also renew your Malaysian passport online? You can skip the usual queue and even pay for your passport via credit card.

According to the Immigration Department director-general, Datuk Seri Mustafar Ali, the My Online Passport system was introduced two years ago but it is underutilised. It was reported that only 9,178 renewal applications were received online.  

The online process is quite straightforward and you can choose your preferred location for collection. Interestingly, you can choose to collect it at selected high commissions abroad including London, Singapore, Hong Kong, Jakarta and New York. If there are no change of details, all you’ll need is to submit a passport photo and make a payment. You can pay via online banking or with your Visa and Mastercard.

After you’ve made your payment, you’ll need to print your receipt which is required for passport collection. You must collect the passport in person and you also must bring your current passport. According to the English site, the collection time will be determined by the system and it will be stated on the receipt.

It is worth pointing out that the BM version states that renewal applications made on a working day before 3PM can be collected on the same day. If you renew after 3PM, your new passport will be ready for collection from 10AM the next working day. You can also check the status of your application here.

The passport renewal fee remains unchanged for online application. It costs RM200 for 5 years for Malaysians aged 13 to 59. The renewal fee for senior citizens aged 60 and above, as well as children aged 12 and below is RM100 for 5 years.
