The Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 has the largest screen-to-body ratio in the biz and a slide out camera

The wait is finally over because Xiaomi has released the full details of their latest fullscreen flagship smartphone. This device is none other than the Mi MIX 3.

In terms of its specs, the Mi MIX 3 features a notch-less 6.39-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display (2,340×1,080 pixels) that has an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The bezels have been further reduced from its predecessor to achieve a screen to body ratio of 93.4% versus the Mi MIX 2 which had a screen-to-body ratio of 80.8%. To put that into perspective, the iPhone XS has a screen to body ratio of 82.9% while the screen to body ratio of the iPhone XS Max is 84.4%.

Being the latest device from Xiaomi, the Mi MIX 3 gets all the latest hardware as well. Like a Snapdragon 845 processor that is paired with a whopping 10GB of RAM and a generous 256GB of internal storage. There are also 6GB or 8GB RAM versions available with both getting 128GB of internal storage instead of 256GB. All versions run the aforementioned Snapdragon 845 processor.

The Mi MIX 3 gets four cameras in total. At the rear, is a dual-camera setup that comprises a 12MP f/1.8 primary sensor for wide angle shots and a 12MP f/2.4 telephoto zoom lens. While at the front, the Mi MIX 3 gets a Sony IMX576 24MP main camera in addition to a 2MP depth of field sensor for bokeh portraits.

Interestingly, the Mi MIX 3 features a sliding mechanism that hides the front-facing cameras behind the screen. The mechanism looks similar to one on the soon-to-be-released honor Magic 2 in that, both are operated manually and both require the user to slide the display downwards, unlike the motorised hidden camera mechanisms found on the OPPO Find X and vivo Nex.

Instead of opting for an in-display fingerprint scanner like Mate 20 Pro, the fingerprint scanner is located on the back but aside from this, the specifications list of the Mi MIX 3 is top rate.

Keeping the lights on is a 3,200mAh battery. This includes a 30% more efficient charging capability compared to the Mi MIX 2, Qi wireless charging and a 10W wireless charger included in the box. According to sources, a 5G variant is expected to be released in Europe next year.

The base 6GB RAM and 128GB Mi MIX 3 will be priced at CNY3,299 (around RM1,980), while the 8GB+128GB will retail at CNY3,599 (RM2,160). The top spec variant with the 10GB RAM and 256GB will cost CNY3,999 (around RM2,400).

Xiaomi has also unveiled a special edition of the Mi MIX 3 that comes with a ceramic body featuring the legendary Chinese creature XieZhi, a mystical beast that symbolizes justice, engraved on the back of the device. This version will set you back CNY4,999 or around RM3,000 which is not bad considering the premium pedigree.

The ceramic version looks to be the one that I would get. What are your thoughts on the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3?
