Here’s a peek at Samsung’s new Galaxy A smartphone with four rear cameras

Samsung will be unveiling its new Galaxy A smartphone and the global launch is taking place in Malaysia tomorrow. While we don’t know the actual model name, the device promises to offer 4X the fun and this is an indication that it will come with 4 cameras.

Ahead of its announcement, we now get a glimpse of the upcoming Galaxy A model which indeed comes with a quad-camera setup at the rear. Read on to find out what’s the feature for each of them.

According to serial leakster @evleaks, the upcoming device will come with a 24MP + 10MP + 8MP + 5MP camera combo. The main shooter is an 24MP f/1.7 camera and you also get a 10MP f/2.4 telephoto camera that offers 2x Optical Zoom. For wider shots, it also gets an 8MP f/2.4 camera that offers a 120-degree wide-angle lens and lastly, there’s a dedicated 5MP f/2.2 shooter for Live Focus.

In terms of design, the four cameras are aligned vertically on the left side of the phone and it also gets a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. From the leaked picture, it appears that it uses a dual-curved glass for the rear which should give it a more premium feel.

A couple of weeks ago, Samsung had unveiled the Galaxy A7 (2018) which features a triple-camera setup. It also consists of a 24MP f/1.7 main camera, an 8MP f/2.4 wide-angle camera and a dedicated 5MP shooter for Live Focus. It’s also worth pointing out that the Galaxy A7 gets a side-mounted fingerprint sensor instead of a rear-mounted unit. We have no details on the actual specs but the new smartphone could be the Galaxy A7+ or the Galaxy A9.

To recap, the triple-camera Galaxy A7 (2018) gets a 6.0″ Super AMOLED Infinity Display and it runs on an unspecified Octa-Core processor clocked at 2.2GHz. It has 4GB or 6GB RAM and comes with either 64GB or 128GB of storage that’s expandable via microSD. The cameras also get AI-assisted Scene Optimiser like the Galaxy Note9 and it comes with a 3,300mAh battery.

With more manufacturers such as Huawei and LG adding three cameras to the back of their phones, Samsung is finally jumping on the same bandwagon and they are taking a step further by adding a fourth unit. We are wondering if it is actually necessary to have a dedicated camera just for depth of field. For most phones, this can be achieved with their existing telephoto or wide-angle cameras. Even phones such as the Google Pixel and iPhone XR can also take bokehlicious portrait photos from a single camera.
