macOS Mojave with Dark Mode and Continuity Camera is now available

After the release of iOS 12 for mobile devices, Apple is finally rolling out its latest macOS Mojave for its desktop products. The new OS update is now live for supported MacBook, Mac mini, iMac and Mac Pro models worldwide including Malaysia.

One of the most anticipated features is Dark Mode. It transforms your entire desktop experience with a darker UI which is great for working in low light conditions. It’s easy to the eyes and you can activate this under System Preferences. The dark theme is integrated with built-in apps such as Mail, Messages, Calendar and Photos, as well as supported third-party applications.

There’s also a Dynamic Desktop where the background image transitions according to the time of the day. On the default Mojave Desert background, you’ll see a different lighting during sunrise, mid-day, sunset and night.

If you always have a messy desktop, you’ll definitely find its Stacks feature useful. With just a couple of clicks, you can organise your files into groups according to file types such as images, PDF, movies and screenshots. To enable Stacks, just right click on the desktop and click on “Use Stacks”. To restore your cluttered desktop, you can always disable Stacks by right clicking on the desktop.

Mojave also introduces Continuity Camera. If you need to add an image quickly to Keynote, Pages, Notes and other supported apps, you can simply import directly from your iPhone or iPad. This spares you from the extra steps of taking a photo, sending it to your Mac and then attaching your image to the document.

Finder is also improved and you can get more things done without having to open additional apps. For images, you can view the file’s metadata in the preview pane and you can perform quick actions such as rotation, markup or even create PDF files from multiple images.

If you take screenshots a lot, you can do much more with its new built-in Screenshot utility. By pressing Shift-Command-5, you’ll get more options including setting a timer, choosing where to save it and you can edit your image immediately by clicking on the thumbnail.

Mojave also brings over a couple of iOS apps over to the desktop such as Stocks, Voice Memos and Home. The App Store is also redesigned for better discover and they have improved Safari for better privacy. This reduces the amount of information an ad engine, a website or social media platform can track from your action.

Mac mini (Late 2012 or newer)
iMac (Late 2012 or newer)
iMac Pro (2017)
Mac Pro (Late 2013, Mid 2010 and Mid 2012 models with recommended Metal-capable graphics cards)

To upgrade, just go to the App Store and click on the “macOS Mojave” page. The update is several GBs in size so it is best that you use an unmetered WiFi connection. As always, it is always recommended that you perform a full backup before upgrading.
