This is the Sony Xperia XZ2 and it’s their first 18:9 display smartphone

Sony will be announcing a couple of phones at the upcoming Mobile World Congress 2018. After sticking to the same old block design for the past few flagships, Sony is finally doing something different for the Xperia XZ2 and XZ2 compact.

As revealed by @evleaks, this will be the first 18:9 display smartphone by Sony. Usually, most manufacturers would use this display aspect ratio to fit a larger screen on a smaller device. As shown in the images below, Sony is still insisting on having a thick forehead and chin to maintain its SONY branding for the front of the device. Nevertheless, it will have the highest screen to body ratio on any Xperia smartphone.

According to Evan’s source, the Xperia XZ2 will have a 5.7″ display, while the XZ2 compact’s display will be a 5-incher. Both will be powered by a top of the line Snapdragon 845 processor and comes with Android 8.0 Oreo as standard.

As teased earlier, Sony Mobile will add more curves and the Xperia XZ2 will be using 3D glass for both front and back. The glossy back looks similar to HTC’s U11 series and the Xperia XZ2 will come in black, silver, green, and pink. For the smaller Xperia XZ2 Compact, it will use a non-scratch polycarbonate back and it’s likely to come in more contrasting colours.

Over at the rear, both are expected to feature a 19MP f/1.8 camera setup that’s capable of 4K HDR videos and super-slow-mo in Full HD resolution. Like the new Xperia XA2 series, the camera is now placed in the centre instead of the edge of the corner like the past Xperia flagships. Another change is the fingerprint sensor which is now a rear-mounted unit.

In terms of battery, the Xperia XZ2 is said to come with a 3,180mAh capacity and it will support wireless charging. Meanwhile, the smaller Xperia XZ2 compact comes with a smaller 2,870mAh capacity which still supports fast charging via USB-C.

The Sony MWC event is taking place this Monday, which is at 3:30PM Malaysian Time. Stay tuned to us for the latest updates.
