If you’ve used an Android smartphone for at least 6 years, you’ve probably used Swype as your default keyboard. Instead of tapping individual keys with your fingers, Swype allows you to type faster by swiping through your letters on the screen. It’s so fast that it has broken a couple of records including a Guinness World Record.
Unfortunately, the custom keyboard’s days are numbered as the development of Swype has ended in order to focus on their AI solutions.
Nuance, the company behind Swype has issued the following statement:
We are sad to announce that Swype-Keyboard for iOS has been discontinued. Here is a statement from Swype Product Team: Nuance will no longer be offering the Swype keyboard on iOS app store. We’re sorry to leave the direct-to-consumer keyboard business, but this change is necessary to allow us to concentrate on developing our AI solutions for sale directly to businesses. We hope you enjoyed using Swype, we sure enjoyed working with the Swype community.
However, this simply means that the app will no longer receive new updates or features, and it is still available for download on Android. Today, the swiping input gestures are no longer exclusive to Swype and you can find other keyboards with a similar swiping input. If you’re looking for an alternative, there’s Gboard and Swiftkey.
