UPDATE: The Android Oreo update is now available for Samsung Malaysia units.
Finally, Samsung has started updating its current flagship smartphones with the very latest Android 8.0 Oreo update. Several Galaxy S8/S8+ users at selected countries have gotten their software update notification and it could be hitting Malaysian units very soon.
The update takes about 487MB in size and it carries the latest February 2018 security update. Apart from getting new features with Oreo, Samsung has made some UI tweaks as well. Here are some screenshots comparing Oreo vs Nougat from Sammobile:
In case you’re wondering, the latest Oreo update does not support Android’s Project Treble. This would allow faster and easier updates since it separates the vendor implementation from the Android OS framework. It’s available for devices with Android 8.0 and above, but its support is dependent on each respective manufacturer. There’s a chance that Samsung might introduce this feature for its upcoming Galaxy S9/S9+ model.
At the moment, the latest Oreo software update is being rolled out for Galaxy S8/S8+ units in France, Germany, India and Poland. There’s no word of its release timeline for Malaysian units but we are guessing that it should arrive before the Galaxy S9 is announced at end of this month. You can try checking for it manually under Settings > Software Update.
