Google wants to know if you’re interested in a YouTube Phone

YouTube Edition Smartphone

With Android One, Google is trying to deliver the best stock Android experience at various price points. Now it looks like Google could be introducing a phone that promises the best YouTube experience in the palm of your hands.

Lately, there’s a survey that’s going around which hints at the possibility of a YouTube Edition smartphone. Essentially, it is a device optimised hardware and software for YouTube viewing.

While YouTube is essentially found on every Android device, the YouTube Edition appears to be offering an easier viewing experience and it allows you to connect with creators seamlessly. One of such features described is YouTwist, which lets you see a grid of YouTube videos when you rotate your phone to landscape mode on the home screen.

The survey also described a dedicated side button for instant YouTube access and to capture videos on the fly which is called YouCapture. On top of that, there’s also a “Creator Connect” feature which sounds like Instagram “Stories” for video creators. To ensure you don’t miss out on the latest videos, the phone will get a Live Lockscreen that will show live thumbnails of videos that matter to you. Below is what the home screen might look like as appeared on the survey.

Hardware wise, the YouTube edition is expected to be a mid-range smartphone which could come with a 6″ screen in an 18:9 display aspect ratio. For a great playback experience, it would come with a dual Dolby Atmos stereo speaker setup.

Similar to Android One, the device could be made by various brands and the survey hinted the possibility of “YouTube Edition by LG” and “YouTube Edition by Samsung”. Some specs were shown in the survey which includes FullHD+ resolution (2160×1080) display, 2.2GHz processor, 4GB RAM, 3700mAh battery with fast charging, dual 12MP cameras and options of either 32GB or 64GB of storage.

Take note that it is just a survey at the moment and it isn’t a confirmation that Google is working on the device already. Sounds interesting but it could end up as a mere “Optimised for YouTube” certification if a phone meets a certain screen and speaker/audio standard. For us, the best phone for videos must have an AMOLED screen with a pair of front-facing stereo speakers.

Would you be interested in getting a YouTube Edition phone? Let us know in the comments below.
