Looks like Volkswagen is seriously considering making their fan favourite Beetle into one of their next electric cars.
However, this wouldn’t be the first nostalgic vehicle of theirs that they would have given the electric car treatment either, the other being the ID Buzz Microbus, which is expected to hit production sometime in 2022.
As for why they want to make the Beetle electric, it’s not because EVs are considered the future of transportation, but because the car would be “closer to history”, Due to the company’s new electric platform (MEB) being very flexible it could see the return of the rear-wheel drive of the original model and possibly the front storage boot too.
Either way, there’s no true indicator of whether or not the EV Beetle will actually be happening, but given the iconic status of the car itself, it’s a pretty good bet we’ll be seeing one hit the road in the near future.
