Twitter’s new character limit has just gone live

No longer will we need to suffer trying to cram in as much as we can into Twitter‘s 140-character limit, as the platform’s new word limit is now getting rolled out to users.

As of today, users will start getting their character limits buffed up from 140 to 280, following a six-week long test where the platform tested out the new limit on a select group of users. Turns out, only 5% of tweets sent were longer than 140 characters while only 2% were over 190, however, the data was collected from before the limit was increased for the rest of us.

The whole reason why Twitter decided to increase the limit is so users can express themselves more easily, but the limit isn’t being increased for Japanese, Korean and Chinese users because they get better mileage out of their respective languages (due to the denser characters being used) and doesn’t require them to cram much.

If you’ve already gotten your limits lifted, you’ll see a little circular character limit indicator where your word counter used to be.
