Dell fixed the biggest problem with their Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop

While Dell‘s Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop has always had pretty good value for money, it has always had one monumental flaw: Its awful TN panel. Today, Dell Malaysia is fixing that with the latest update to their popular gaming laptop.

Yep, Dell is making two big upgrades to the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming (7577). First, they beefed up performance so this refreshed device comes with up to an Intel Core i7-7700HQ processor, 16GB of DDR4 SDRAM, 128GB of SSD storage + a 1TB HDD, and a brand new NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 graphics card with 6GB of GDDR5 memory. It is a Max-Q design card, however, so it does take a hit in performance compared to a standard GTX1060. Still, the trade-off is better thermals and the ability to fit this card into a smaller chassis.

That said, the new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming features a body that’s almost identical to that of the previous model (7567). Aesthetically, the only big difference is that the new one has a different grille design and more uniformed colours.

But, the biggest difference — and in my opinion, the best — is the new display. Dell has FINALLY upgraded the laptops across the range to 15.6″ IPS panels, with the top-of-the-line model featuring a 4K screen, and ditched the god-awful TN panels.

We actually have a spec’d out last-gen Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming laptop that we use for video editing in the office so believe me when I say the old display is awful. There isn’t a single angle that the screen doesn’t have some kind of colour or brightness shift. I get a headache just looking at it, so I’m really glad that Dell’s finally ditching it for the 7577.

From my brief hands on session, the upgrade in overall viewing experience on the 7577 is night and day. Now, I’m not saying this screen is best screen ever, I’m saying it’s leap and bounds better than the older TN panel — it’s so much more usable. Viewing angles are far better and that just makes using the laptop a much better experience. Rejoice because there’s no need to search for IPS panels on eBay anymore.

There are also a few smaller touches that Dell has added to the new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming. It’s now got fast-charging that the company says can give you 80% of your battery back in just 1 hour — not bad. Dell also added a USB C port with Thunderbolt 3 support to the laptop, expanding its already comprehensive suite of I/O.

As a whole, I’m pretty impressed with the upgrades Dell made to this laptop. I think they did a pretty good job in patching up their biggest weaknesses because the rest of the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming is rock solid already. Dell seems to have absolutely nailed it with this new budget gaming laptop.

Prices for the new Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming start at RM3,899 for the base model with an Intel Core i5-7300HQ processor, 4GB of RAM, a 1TB HDD and an NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 GPU. Alternatively, the top spec model with the i7-7700HQ, 16GB RAM, 128GB SSD + 1TB HDD, 4K IPS display, and NVIDIA GeForce GTX1060 Max-Q will set you back RM6,899.
