Acer’s bringing more power to their Spin and Swift series of laptops with the launch of the new Spin 5 and Swift 3. These are the company’s ultra-portable devices and now the company has packed in discrete GPUs for that extra kick.
The Spin 5 is a convertible laptop where you can flip the screen all the way around and use it as a tablet. Acer’s new Spin 5 comes with two screen sizes: 13.3″ and 15.6″. The laptop can be configured with up to an Intel Core i7-8550U processor and feature Full HD IPS displays. Memory on both devices cap out at 8GB of DDR4 RAM.
For storage, users can get the 13.3″ variant with 256GB of SSD storage while customers that opt for the 15.6″ version can add a 1TB HDD on top of that too for even more space. As far as build quality goes, both laptops are pretty solidly built with a premium metal chassis. However, this does add to the weight as the 13.3-inch Spin 5 weighs 1.5kg while the 15.6-inch variant is 2.2kg.
While the original Spin 5 laptops only came with integrated Intel HD620 graphics, Acer is now including a discrete NVIDIA GeForce GTX1050 GPU in the 15.6-inch model. This is a pretty capable card that can even run modern titles at 1080p. And they did all of this while maintaining a svelte 17.9mm thickness.
Acer’s Spin 5 is priced from RM3,599 for the 13.3 model and RM4,999 for the 15.6″ model. Full product details and pricing can be found at Acer Malaysia’s website.
If a 360-degree hinge isn’t your cup of tea, you can always opt for the more traditional Swift 3. This laptop has been refreshed to also feature an 8th-generation Intel Core i5-8250U processor with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. Besides that, it retains a nice metal body with the 15.6″ IPS Full HD display.
Acer also added an NVIDIA GeForce MX150 GPU that should give you a nice bump in graphics performance. Swift 3 retains its great selection of ports, including 2 USB 3.0 Type A ports, a USB Type C port, a USB 2.0 Type A port, an SD card slot, an HDMI port and a 3.5mm headphone/microphone combo port.
Acer’s Swift 3 is priced at RM4,299, placing it at the top of the Swift 3 range. More details here.
