vivo’s launching a pair of mid-range smartphones with near-bezel-less displays

Xiaomi stole the limelight yesterday with their announcement of the Mi A1 smartphone that marries the company’s great bang-for-buck hardware and the stock vanilla goodness of Android One. But while people were fawning over Xiaomi’s announcement, vivo also has something in the works that’s due to launch tomorrow.

Its big selling feature? A near bezel-less FullView display like the one on the Samsung Galaxy Note8.

Vivo Malaysia posted this teaser earlier this week, showing off their upcoming V7 and V7+ smartphone’s new display. Rumour has it that it will be a 5.5-inch (V7) and 5.7-inch (V7+) Full HD 1080p panel, but when it’s near-bezel-less, I don’t think many would mind the resolution.

But that’s not all that is exciting about this phone because vivo’s new handset will apparently also come with a 24-megapixel selfie shooter, taking things up a notch from the V5 and V5Plus it succeeds. Yep, 24 megapixels all dedicated to your pretty face — that’s probably more detail than I’ll ever want of my own face. I personally prefer: vaguely out of focus.

Still, vivo has been doubling down on their “Perfect Selfie” mantra so it’s not really surprising to see a spec bump there. That said, vivo’s V series of smartphones generally occupy the mid-to-upper-mid-range segment of the market so as it stands, the rumoured specs include a Snapdragon 653/660 processor for the V7+ and a Snapdragon 630 chip for the V7. The phones may come with up to 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage, though, which should make for a solid performance.

Beyond that, other leaks have hinted at an Android Nougat out-of-the-box software affair with vivo’s Funtouch OS skin on top and a 3,500 mAh battery.

One thing we know for sure, though, is that all will be revealed on the 7th of September during the phone’s launch event in India. So stay tuned for the updates! In the meantime, you can check out these slightly cheesy teaser videos on Facebook:
