The latest Android sweet treat is Oreo

Google has finally revealed the official name for its upcoming Android in conjunction with the solar eclipse in the United States. Almost 4 years ago, Google had partnered with a well-known chocolate brand, KitKat, for Android 4.4. Now they are doing something similar by announcing Oreo as the latest sweet treat for Android 8.0.

As announced during Google I//O 2017, the latest Android promises to be faster, more power-efficient and it handles your notifications better with dots on your app icons. Google claims that Oreo boots up 2x faster on a Google Pixel and it also helps to cut down on power usage by minimizing background activity. For better multitasking, there’s also native picture-in-picture support for video playback.

To protect users better, Google has introduced a new system called Google Play Protect. It’s an additional layer of app verification which will continuously monitor your apps for any unusual activity. If it is confirmed to be a threat, Google Play will remove the app for you to prevent further problems.

According to Google, they are already pushing Android Oreo sources on Android Open Source Project (AOSP) today. Official software updates for Pixel/Pixel XL and Nexus 5X/6P should be rolling out soon along with the Pixel C and the Nexus Player. If you’re using an Android device from other manufacturers such as Nokia, Huawei, HTC, LG, Motorola, Samsung, Sony and etc, you should be getting your Android 8.0 Oreo update by end of this year. Of course, do expect them to prioritise their flagship models before it trickles down to their mid-range lineup.

If you have a supported Nexus or Pixel device and you can’t wait, you can join the Android Beta program to give it a try.
