The first iPhone was released 10 years ago today

The iPhone is the smartphone that changed the world. Its revolutionary design defined the way we interact with a touch screen using Multi-Touch and it showed how apps can be distributed in a seamless manner through an App Store.

In case you didn’t know, the iPhone was first released exactly 10 years ago on 29 June 2007 after it was first announced at Macworld on 9 January 2007. At that time, the first gen iPhone was offered in two options: a 4GB option at US$499 (RM1,721 in 2007) and an 8GB option at US$599 (RM2,066 in 2007) on a two year contract with Cingular in the US.

For Malaysia, we didn’t get the iPhone officially until March 2009 when the iPhone 3G was launched locally with Maxis as the exclusive telco. Back then, they were offering the iPhone 3GS 8GB for free on 24-month contract of Maxis i-Value 4 postpaid plan (RM375/month) or at RM2,540 with a 6-months contract of Value Plus 80 postpaid plan (RM80/month). Today, you can get an iPhone easily from the big 4 telcos, Apple Online store and authorised resellers.

If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a look back at the evolution of iPhone from the first model until the iPhone 7/7 Plus:

Later this year, Apple is expected to release its updated iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus models. Word also has it that Apple will be introducing a special edition iPhone 8 which is rumoured to come with an all-display front that has an embedded TouchID on the screen. Could this be the biggest change for the iPhone yet? We’ll find out soon enough in the next few months.
