U Mobile to introduce free data roaming for postpaid plans with Roam-Onz

U Mobile looks poised to launch something big tomorrow and it’s got something to do with data roaming. More specifically, U Mobile will introduce Roam-Onz, an upcoming addition to the company’s already established line of -Onz features.

Here’s what we know.

We received an SMS from U Mobile on our Hero P70 phone line with a message that reads as follows:

Based on the message above, it’s pretty obvious that the orange telco will be revealing a brand new data roaming feature, called Roam-Onz, which is designed to give its users free data roaming in 12 selected countries.  The text also says that more details will be revealed tomorrow and that this new plan will go into effect starting the 16th of May 2017.

This is in line with the invite we received from U Mobile awhile back to a launch event being held tomorrow too. We suspect that that is where U Mobile will reveal all the nitty-gritty details for Roam-Onz.

But that’s not all. One other thing we noticed was that we only received this SMS on our Hero P70 line and not on any of our other U Mobile lines that are below Hero P70. This leads us to suspect that Roam-Onz (or at least this iteration of it) will likely only be available to those on the P70 and above plan.

That’s similar to U Mobile’s existing Data Backpack roaming promotion which ends today (15th of May 2017). Data Backpack allows subscribers on the Hero P70 plan and above to use their local data quota when they’re roaming to 12 selected countries for no additional cost.

Users on plans below Hero P70 could also roam to those 12 countries via U Data Roam 10 but that only gave users 500MB of high-speed data. So, it will be interesting to see what U Mobile’s plans are with this new Roam-Onz and how it will differ from the Data Backpack.

Looking at other telcos, Digi has Roam Like Home which is free for users on the Digi Postpaid 110 plan and gives users 5GB of data roaming plus 60 minutes roaming voice calls to 8 select countries. Maxis, on the other hand, are letting their customers have 365 days of unlimited roaming for just RM1 — the catch being that you have to sign a 12-month contract with them.

Either way, all will likely be revealed tomorrow so stay tuned for further updates!

UPDATE: Roam-Onz is available for postpaid customers on P70, P78, P98, i90, i130, UD90, UD130, U Premium and U Platinum customers and it is valid from now until 31 December 2017. For customers on the P70, P78, i90, Ultimate Device 90, and U Premium, you will be getting 5GB/month. If you’re on P98, i130, Ultimate Device 130, and U Platinum, you will receive 8GB/month.
