Celcom discontinues its WiFiPlus service

As an added service for its customers, Celcom had rolled out a WiFi hotspot service called WiFiPlus at selected locations nationwide. Unfortunately, this service will be coming to an end as Celcom will be discontinuing its WiFiPlus offering on 16 May 2017.

The WiFiPlus service is currently offered for free to selected postpaid and Xpax prepaid customers with a data plan. It promises average speeds of up to 5Mbps and it is accessible with a username/password sent via SMS.

For those without a subscription, WiFiPlus costs RM2/day for 500MB, RM8/week for 2GB and RM18/month for 4GB. Availability of the service is rather scarce and I can’t recall stumbling upon a WiFiPlus hotspot at shopping centres. Even the coverage map locator isn’t particularly helpful.

As telcos are offering more data quota than before, it appears that there’s very little need for complimentary WiFi in this day and age. Maxis also had its own WiFi Hotspot service but it was also discontinued a while back. If you need connectivity for your laptop, using your phone’s hotspot feature is much faster and convenient.

Have you used Celcom’s WiFiPlus service? Let us know in the comments below.
