How big is the Galaxy S8/S8+ compared to other smartphones?

The upcoming Galaxy S8 will be getting bigger displays than its phablet Note series. The Galaxy S8 and S8+ are expected to come with 5.8″ and 6.2″ Super AMOLED displays respectively, making them the biggest Galaxy S series yet.

Similar to the LG G6 that was announced recently, the new Samsung flagships will be going for a taller proportion with an 18:9 display aspect ratio. Combine that with a reduced bezel design, it’s now possible to have a larger screen without having to feel like a mammoth phablet in your hands.

Furthermore, Samsung will continue to use dual curved displays which would also reduce the overall width. So how do they stack up against the rest? We now have a better visual comparison thanks to serial leakster @onleaks.

The Galaxy S8 with its 5.8″ dual curved display might sound huge but Samsung has shaved a lot of bezels including its forehead and chin. As seen from its leaked renders, you’ll get more display and Samsung has even removed its iconic home button from the front.

Based on the dimensions provided by @onleaks, the Galaxy S8 (148.9 x 68mm) has a smaller footprint than its 5.1″ Galaxy S7 (142.4 x 69.6 mm) and the 5.5″ Galaxy S7 edge (150.9 x 72.6 mm). Interestingly, it has the same height as the LG G6 but the Galaxy S8 is still narrower by 4mm due to its curved edges.

What’s more surprising is that the iPhone 7 with an even smaller 4.7″ screen is merely 1mm narrower than the Galaxy S8 that has a 1.1″ larger display.

Meanwhile, the Galaxy S8+ with its 6.2″ dual curved display is still narrower than most of its 5.5″ rivals. With its purported 74mm width, it’s narrower than the Huawei P10 Plus, Nexus 6P and iPhone 7 Plus.

If these dimensions from are @onleaks are true, it is safe to assume that the Galaxy S8 would feel more like a compact 5″ smartphone while the bigger Galaxy S8 Plus should feel slightly wider than a standard 5.5″ device. Below is a footprint comparison against some popular models.

S8 (5.8″) – 148.9 x 68 mm
S7 (5.1″) – 142.4 x 69.6 mm
iPhone 7 (4.7″) – 138.3 x 67.1 mm
LG G6 (5.7″) – 148.9 x 71.9 mm
S7 edge (5.5″) – 150.9 x 72.6 mm
Note7 (5.7″) – 153.5 x 73.9 mm
S8+ (6.2″) – 159 x 74 mm
P10 Plus (5.5″) – 153.5 x 74.2 mm
Nexus 6P (5.7″) – 159.3 x 77.8 mm
iPhone 7 Plus (5.5″) – 158.2 x 77.9 mm
Mate 9 (5.9″) – 156.9 x 78.9 mm
Mi Mix (6.4″) – 158.8 x 81.9 mm

The Galaxy S8 will be revealed on 29 March and it could go on sale towards the end of the following month. Assuming both specs are the same, which Galaxy S8 would you pick? Let us know in the comments below.
