Samsung has just introduced their brand new Exynos 9 processor which will be powering their upcoming Galaxy S8 flagships. While the Snapdragon 835 variant is likely to head for the US market, we are likely to get the Exynos version for Malaysia.
Similar to the Snapdragon 835, the new Exynos 9 8895 is based on a smaller 10nm FinFET process. This provides better efficiency with 27% higher performance and 40% lower power consumption compared to 14nm based FinFET processors. It’s still an octa-core unit consisting of 4x 2nd generation custom high-performance cores (Mongoose) and another 4x Cortex A53 cores for lower power consumption.
In the graphics department, it uses ARM’s Mali-G71 20-core GPU. With its advanced MFC (multi-format codec), it can support video recording and playback up to 4K UHD resolution at 120fps.
The Exynos 9 8895 processor is also their first to deliver gigabit LTE connectivity with 5 carrier aggregation. Similar to Qualcomm’s X16 LTE modem, it can support 1Gbps downloads (5CA) and 150Mbps uploads (2CA).
With more demand for security applications such as mobile payments, Exynos 8895 will come with a dedicated security processing unit. There’s also a dedicated Vision Processing Unit (VPU) for machine vision which is designed to enable additional motion detection features, image registration and video tracking.
Production for the Exynos 9 8895 is already in mass production, so you can expect them to be ready for the next big Galaxy that should be announced next month.
