Although the Samsung Galaxy S8‘s launch is still some ways off, we already have a photo of what is allegedly the Samsung Galaxy S8. And you know what? Most of the rumours that we’ve heard so far are apparently true.
This image comes courtesy of leaker Evan Blass (@evleaks) and in his report on Venture Beat, he drops more details on the specifications. According to Evan, there will be two variants of the Galaxy S8 — one will sport a 5.8-inch Quad HD Super AMOLED display, while the other bumps that up to 6.2-inches. This pushes the new S8’s screen size past that of the company’s phablet Galaxy Note line which previously tops out at 5.7 inches.
This is because the new displays now cover 83% of the front of the smartphone, leaving no room for a physical home button or capacitive touch buttons. Both devices will, however, have what has become Samsung’s signature dual curved edge screen. Because of this, the new phones will come with a slightly different 18:9 aspect ratio.
Evan continued that the new devices will indeed be powered by either a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor or a Samsung Exynos processor, depending on the region. Both chips will be made using 10nm fabrication methods and will see a performance boost of about 11%, graphics boost of 23% while being 20% more efficient than the Galaxy S7.
The energy efficiency is crucial because Samsung’s S8, despite the larger screen, comes with very conservative 3,000 mAh and 3,500 mAh batteries for the 5.8 and 6.2-inch sizes respectively. Charging is taken care of by a USB Type-C port. What’s more, it’ll feature a 3.5mm headphone jack. There will also be 4GB of RAM inside with base models now coming with 64GB of onboard storage (expandable via microSD) instead of 32GB.
Samsung’s S8 will improve on the S7’s imaging capabilities with a 12MP primary camera and an 8-megapixel selfie shooter with f/1.7 aperture lenses on both cameras. The main camera will also allegedly possess a new visual search functionality. Alongside the front camera, there will also be an iris scanner similar to the one on the Galaxy Note7. Because the front display now occupies so much of the screen, the new S8 will see its fingerprint sensor moved to the back instead, right next to the camera lens.
Further, the S8 is said to come with Samsung’s version of the Google Assistant, called Bixby, that is said to be able to handle more complex commands than its competitors such as multi-part instructions. It’ll also be launched with a dedicated button at the side of the devices. Evan also confirmed earlier rumours of Samsung’s DeX accessory that’s a dock which will turn your phone into a desktop PC-esque device like Microsoft’s Continuum.
Evan also stated that pressure sensitive input technology will finally make its way to Samsung’s Galaxy devices. More commonly known as force touch, the bottom half of the Galaxy S8’s display is said to be able to distinguish between different types of screen presses.
Although the device is said to launch on March 29th at Samsung’s Unpacked event, Evan states that the new device will go on sale globally on the 21st of April. He also said that in Europe, the new phones will retail for EUR799 (around RM3,783) for the 5.8-inch model and EUR899 (around RM4,255) for the 6.2-inch model.
Finally, it’s worth noting that these are still unconfirmed specifications, but Evan Blass has been pretty accurate in his leaks of previous devices thus far. I do still encourage you to take it with a grain of salt.
