HTC has been trying to release a smartwatch for the longest time. Most recently, it was reported that the Taiwanese company would be making an Android Wear smartwatch in collaboration with Under Armour. If you’ve been waiting for one, unfortunately, HTC is scrapping its smartwatch plans for the time being.
According to HTC’s President of Global Sales and Chief Financial Officer, Chia-Lin Chang, they won’t be having an Android watch anytime soon and HTC has yet to nail down the smartwatch experience. Looking at the competition, he even mentions that the Apple Watch has been declining.
Smartwatches as a whole are already showing signs of a slow down with IDC reporting a 51.6% decline in the third quarter of 2016. Apart from the 2nd gen Apple Watch and the Samsung Gear S3, there aren’t many smartwatches making huge waves last year.
If you’re looking for a new Android Wear 2.0 smartwatch, you’ll probably want to take a look at Huawei which is said to be launching their Watch 2.0 at Mobile World Congress next month. For now, HTC is focusing solely on smartphones and we hope to see something more exciting than the HTC U.
