Vivo V5Plus: The 20MP dual front camera smartphone launches in Malaysia

As more manufacturers jump on the dual back camera train, it was really only a matter of time before we saw manufacturers start moving towards a dual front camera setup too.

Both LG and Lenovo did it. And now, with the launch of the Vivo V5Plus, we have yet another dual selfie camera smartphone in Malaysia.

Awhile back, this smartphone went up for pre-orders on authorised retailer DirectD for a price of RM1,799. Today, Vivo Malaysia officially launches this smartphone and it will go on sale on the 21st of January 2017 at all authorised Vivo resellers nationwide. The first 100 customers to pick up a Vivo V5Plus smartphone will also walk away with a mystery gift (while stocks last).

The phone we’re looking at today is a 5.5-incher with a Full HD display in front. Inside, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octa-core 14nm processor mated to 4GB of RAM powers it. For storage, the handset gets 64GB built-in and has dual-SIM support but no microSD expansion. Keeping the lights on is a 3,160 mAh battery that has fast-charging capabilities so you should be able to top it up in a jiffy.

Build-wise, the Vivo V5Plus sports a very familiar build. From the overall look and shape, one might mistake it for an iPhone. But one look at the U-shaped antenna lines and you would definitely mistake it for an iPhone 7 instead.

Still, this is a smartphone with two selfie cameras! The first one is a 20-megapixel Sony IMX376 shooter that’s tasked with actually capturing the photo. The second camera is an 8MP unit that’s designed to capture depth-of-field information — sort of like the HTC One M8’s back camera and the Lenovo Vibe S1’s front camera — giving you blurry bokeh effects.

On the software side of things, the Vivo V5Plus will be running on Android 6.0 Marshmallow with Vivo’s Funtouch 3.0 skin on top.
