Over 10 million Huawei P9/P9 Plus have shipped worldwide

Chinese smartphone maker Huawei has announced that they have shipped over 10 million units of its P9/P9 Plus flagship. This marks a significant growth for them in the high-end smartphone segment.

Announced earlier this year, the P9 is their first smartphone series to feature a pair of rear cameras that are co-engineered with Leica. With improved build quality and heighten marketing efforts, Huawei has shipped a total of 33.6 million smartphones in Q3 2016.

That’s an increase of 23% from Q3 2015 and 44% of those shipments are from its mid to high-end lineup. It is clear that Huawei is no longer about selling cheap and cheerful smartphones, but they are now a serious contender in the premium segment.

According to IDC, Huawei is currently ranked #3 behind Samsung and Apple which had shipped 72.5 million and 45.5 million units respectively. While both Samsung and Apple had declined slightly in the last quarter, the other Chinese brands such as OPPO and vivo have been doing rather well by posting triple-digit growth in Q3 2016.

Most recently, Huawei had also introduced their new Mate 9 series that’s priced from RM2,699 for its base model and up to RM6,999 for its limited-edition Porsche Design variant. The new Mate 9 could do equally or even better than the P9 since there isn’t much competition if you’re looking for a high-end large-screen phablet.
