Yes, you read that right, there is no typo there. Meet the Casio Exilim FR110H Outdoor Recorder — the rugged action camera with a 1.9MP back-illuminated CMOS sensor and really large individual pixels to help you see in the dark.

Casio’s latest device is banking on the premise that when everything else is equal, larger pixels mean you get better low light performance because they absorb more light — and it’s very apparent that the company is doing so. Why? Well, first of, the 1/2.8-inch sensor itself isn’t particularly big, nor does it have a particularly fast f/2.8 aperture lens.

However, because of the low megapixel count, this camera can have larger individual pixels to capture more light — which is sort of what everyone raved about the Nexus 6P‘s camera when it first came out. It’ll even go up to ISO51,200 thanks to the new noise suppression circuitry as well as a high-speed Exilim engine HS ver.3. But, is it worth it?

Well, the sample images don’t look particularly great as individual photos, but then again this camera isn’t here to get you the best possible image quality. It’s an action camera to help you see in the dark and if the sample images are to be believed, it’ll do just that.

This camera can record Full HD 1080p videos at 30fps with 3 stops of stabilisation. It’s even got a detachable 3-inch LCD display, like Casio’s FR action cameras, that has a special setting to work in very low light.

This camera’s really rugged too as Casio claims that it’s drop, water, freeze and dust proof. Unfortunately, there is no information on how much this will be sold for, but it will go on sale in Japan on the 9th of December.

We don’t know if this camera will make it to Malaysia, but if it does, would you be interested in picking one up? Let me know in the comments below.
