So we’ve had antenna-gate and we’ve had chip-gate and now it looks like we might be on the verge of a brand new -gate from Apple as reports have begun to come in that indicates that the brand new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus hisses under load.
This is what it sounds like.
This video comes courtesy of Stephen Hackett of 512 pixels, who noticed that his iPhone 7 Plus would produce a hissing sound, which would get worse under load. Once he pointed out that his iPhone was hissing, several others have begun to notice the same thing too, though it is uncertain how many devices are actually affected.
Many have inferred that the reason for this noise is something called “coil whine” — a high pitched screech that can be found in virtually any electronic component (a CPU or GPU for example). Here’s a quick explanation:
Unfortunately, there is also no real fix to this particular problem. However, it is worth noting that Stephen managed to get his device replaced when he contacted Apple Care.
Is this something you should consider before picking up an iPhone 7 when it eventually arrives in Malaysia? As of right now, it doesn’t seem to be the case. Unless this hissing sound actually stems from something more serious than just coil whine, it’s likely that the few devices that do experience this whining are the product of the inevitable variance during the manufacturing process.
