The Galaxy Note7 probably has the best display on a smartphone right now. Although it has a similar 5.7″ Quad HD display as the Galaxy S6 edge+, the new flagship has a couple of new innovations that won top marks from DisplayMate.
Samsung has always been pushing AMOLED displays on their flagship models and now they are making double curved displays mainstream since the Galaxy S6 edge. In terms of brightness, the Galaxy Note7 boasts a maximum brightness of 1,048 nits in auto during high ambient lighting conditions. This is the brightest DisplayMate has ever tested on a smartphone and it’s also the lowest in screen reflectance level at 4.6% for better outdoor visibility.
For better adjustment of screen brightness, the Note7 has not one but two ambient sensors. Apart from the standard sensor at the front, the Note7 has a secondary ambient light sensor at the rear to adapt to backlight especially when you’re holding the device. You can also customised your preferred auto brightness levels and it will transition appropriately based on your desired levels and current ambient light.
The Galaxy Note7 also has HDR for video playback which is common on the latest 4K UHD TVs. In order to achieve this, the Note7 requires Digital Cinema DCI-P3 wide colour gamut with perfect blacks, infinite contrast ratio and a peak brightness above 1,000 nits. Not only the Galaxy Note7 can play native HDR videos but it can also improve standard videos with HDR-like effects.
For night owls, the Note7 has a Super Dimming Mode which lets you turn down the brightness to just 2 nits. This makes the screen more pleasant to look at in total darkness and you won’t annoy other people around you in a cinema. The always on display for showing time and notification is also more efficient as each sub-pixels are individually turned on/off for better battery life. For better sleep at night, there’s also a Blue Light filter mode which cuts down blue light up to 80%.
