Woman sues Microsoft over Windows 10, wins USD10,000

A woman sued Microsoft and won USD10,000 (around RM40,740) after she was forcefully upgraded to Windows 10, The Seattle Times reports. This upgrade happened without her authorisation only a few days after Microsoft released Windows 10 to the public last year.

Windows 10 wasn’t the cleanest PC operating system to have come out of Microsoft, what with all the privacy scares surrounding it. So, it isn’t that surprising that many, including some in our office, were hesitant to upgrade and decided to remain on the older Windows 7 or 8 operating systems.

But, as we discovered earlier, many PCs were forcefully upgraded to Windows 10 regardless of whether the user wanted to or not. This was exactly what happened to travel-agency business owner Teri Goldstein.

After the upgrade, the computer she uses to run her business slowed to a crawl, often crashing, rendering the laptop unusable for days at a time. Teri claims that she had never heard of Windows 10 nor did anyone ask her if she wanted to update her PC.

Following the update and computer issues suffered by Teri, she attempted to reach out to Microsoft’s customer support. When customer support didn’t fix the problem, Teri had had enough and took Microsoft to court seeking compensation for lost wages and the cost of a new computer.

Last month, the tech giant dropped their appeal and Goldstein collected her USD10,000 judgement from the company. Mm, sweet victory.

Microsoft, of course, remains defiant and denies all wrongdoing, stating that they halted their appeal only to avoid the expense of further litigation. It is worth noting that while Microsoft had made some tweaks on how the upgrade was presented, these forceful upgrades are still happening.
