Samsung is roughing things up again with their Galaxy S7 Active

Samsung’s Galaxy S7/S7 edge are among one of the best smartphones in the world, but they’ve always been a little…fragile with all that glass. There is good news for those who have fists of ham and fingers of butter, however, as Samsung has just released the Galaxy S7 Active.

Well, good and bad news.

The good news is that the S7 Active is everything we know and love about the Galaxy S7, only tougher. It’s got a new industrial look and build to it with a textured back (goodbye glass) and rubberised sides that will withstand drops much better than the regular S7.

The rubberised sides also extend a little over the 5.1-inch SuperAMOLED display to protect it even more if your devices falls screen first. Samsung also says that the display is shatterproof, but we’re not sure how true that actually is. According to MKBHD, the S7 Active does have a Military Grade 810G shock resistance, however.

The last S6 Active did manage to survive being used as a hockey puck, so this probably could too. Lew?

It’s also got that fantastic 12-megapixel Dual Pixel camera that we love so much. You should get the same amount of quality and speed as the regular S7, but now that it’s chunkier and grippier it should be easier to hold and use as a camera.

The S7 Active retains the S7’s IP68 water resistance, for obvious reasons, and includes three physical buttons on the front of the device. So, instead of just having a physical home button, you’ve got a physical back and recents button as well for easier operation when you’re doing “active” stuff. Samsung has also included a dedicated shortcut button to the left side of the smartphone just above the volume rockers.

This new button can be customised to launch your favourite apps. You can set it to launch three different apps with either a single press, double press or a long press and it works even if your phone is locked.

Other improvements also come on the inside. While the specs are your usual affair, with a Snapdragon 820 processor mated to 4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage, the battery gets much beefier, coming in at 4,000 mAh. That’s even bigger than what you’d find inside the Galaxy S7 edge, and that device already has great battery life.

But, here’s the downside. You might have noticed that the processor in the smartphone is the Snapdragon 820, not the Exynos 8890 that we’re getting. That’s because this S7 Active (as of right now at least) is only available via AT&T. That probably means it’s not coming to Malaysia anytime soon, if at all, and that’s unfortunate.

It is rather pricey, coming in at about USD795 (around RM3,250). What do you guys think of the S7 Active? Would you want it to come to Malaysia?
