LG doubles up on its upcoming flagship with a touch of Magic

New leaks suggest that LG might borrow some cues from the V series and plaster them on their next flagship smartphone, the LG G5. It’ll be the Korean maker’s first ever all-metal smartphone too, according to a source involved in the organisation.

The dominos have started to fall since the day before, as an image of a supposed camera setup of LG’s latest smartphone was leaked but we’ll hold that for later.

LG V10 shown

Apparently the G5 will take some elements from the V10, as well as the older G-series that it hopes to successfully replace. That won’t be all since a new device should come with new features – unless you’re HTC and Sony.

Now onto what specs we can expect on the LG G5. As mentioned earlier, it’ll be a metal unibody case and it’s purported to carry a 5.3-inch display capable of Quad HD (2560 x 1440) resolution.

Why did they shave off 0.2-inches? That’s to make way for the secondary “ticker” display that has been shown on another LG device: the V10. We talked about what the ticker display does here.

Besides that, LG will allegedly reduce battery capacity to only 2,800mAh, though the efficiency of the processor underneath the G5 will be the main factor when its comes to battery life; all signs point towards a Snapdragon 820 processor, while the G5 is said to have 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage.

The ticker display might help with battery life too, being the only screen that lights up instead of the main display when notifications come in. This could mean that LG’s new device could be thinner than its predecessor but we’ll have to wait and see if that’s the case.

Evan Blass aka Evleaks and VentureBeat also mentioned that there was no talk of a microSD slot but they’ve pointed out that external storage has always been conspicuous with LG devices. So in other words, a no mention doesn’t mean it won’t be there.

In another act to market themselves differently from the pack, the source also claims that LG will include some sort of modular expansion through a feature called “Magic Slot”. Again, there was no talk of how this would be implemented but there were examples given to show what it could include: camera add-ons, audio amplifier and physical keyboard.

We saved the camera leak for last as LG’s cameras (of late) have been top notch. Based on an older leak, it’ll look something like this:

Showing a dual-camera module, we’re forced to remember the pitfall of the Ultrapixel but we’ll hope in earnest that LG doesn’t screw this up. The main rear lens has been rumoured to be a 16-megapixel sensor and adding the secondary lens would allow wide-angle shots up to 135-degrees. The cameras will be separated by a module with four internal elements; two of them will be LED flash bulbs, one will be a laser autofocus and the last will be a similar RGB sensor.

If all these specs have got you salivating – hold on – no word has got out of when it’ll be released. VentureBeat only managed to get a “first quarter of 2016” range of when it’ll be out.
