Expect clearer voice calls on Digi’s upcoming VoLTE service

Paving the way to bigger things once they’ve got their widest LTE network coverage news out of the way, Digi is again attempting to run away from the pack. Their latest venture in question is field-testing Voice-over-LTE (VoLTE) on their 4G LTE network.

Boldly claiming to provide the widest 4G LTE coverage, capable of connecting every 1 in 2 Malaysians, Digi seeks to add more value to their services by adding VoLTE to their repertoire. Data speeds have forever been a topic of discussion amongst Malaysians, especially those who rely on their smartphones.

But have we forgotten that phones were made for us to actually talk to each other? Well having said, there hasn’t been a large emphasis on call quality, since the whole experience has been fairly satisfactory, albeit some drop calls every now and then. With VoLTE these issues might soon be a thing of the past, resolving it by delivering voice calls over the 4G data network.

Currently “sedentary” to be made over 2G and 3G networks, imagine having voice calls through 4G networks – will there be a difference, you ask? Ever been in an LRT and your coach is screaming away and you can’t hear the person on the other end? Well in theory, VoLTE will transmit high fidelity audio and add noise cancellation features to your calls. That means a lot more talking/listening and a lot less shouting/closing one ear to hear clearly.

VoLTE will also allow users to bridge the gap of internet use while active in a voice call; giving you 4G LTE speeds whilst in both uses. Presently, you’d notice that your network switches from 4G to 2G/3G when making a call? Yup, that’s the clear example. Another benefit would be faster connection to the other end, possibly 2-3 times faster to get you connected to the person you’re calling.
