Moto X for 2015 grows bigger with 5.5″ and 5.7″ sizes

The 3rd gen Moto X comes as a big surprise today where they have announced not one, but two version with distinctive specs and sizes. In the previous Moto X for 2014, it was quite an average flagship device with a 5.2″ Full HD display and a Snapdragon 801 processor that’s powered by a rather small 2,300mAh capacity battery. For 2015, Motorola is trying to cover all segments above the Moto G with a mid-range 5.5″ Moto X Play and a higher-spec 5.7″ Moto X Style.

Moto X Style

Among the two, the Moto X Style (or Moto X Pure Edition in the US) is their top of the line offering with a huge 5.7″ Quad HD (2560×1440) display and it runs on a Hexa-Core Snapdragon 808 processor that’s currently powering the LG G4. It is mated to 3GB of RAM and comes with a choice of 32GB or 64GB of storage. Unlike the previous 2nd gen model, the new Moto X gets a microSD slot which accepts up to 128GB capacity. For better audio playback, it also gets a pair of front firing stereo speakers.

For imaging, it gets a high-resolution 21MP f/2.0 main camera that shoots 4K videos while the front sports a 5MP f/2.0 shooter that has its own flash light. In terms of connectivity, it gets Bluetooth 4.1 LE, WiFi 802.11ac MIMO support, NFC and 4G LTE Cat 6 with speeds up to 300Mbps. It isn’t submergeable but the Moto X Style gets a nano coating repellent that’s IP52 certified. Keeping the lights on is a 3,000mAh capacity battery that supports Turbo Charging.

Moto X Play

Moving down a notch, is the Moto X Play which offers a 5.5″ Full HD (1920×1080) display and a mid-range Snapdragon 615 Octa-Core processor that’s mated to just 2GB of RAM. For storage, it gets a smaller 16GB or 32GB options with room for more via its microSD expansion slot. The main camera is also a 21MP shooter with dual-tone LED flash but the front gets a more basic 5MP camera.

Connectivity is also a step back with Bluetooth 4.0 LE, WiFi up to 802.11n but it still supports 4G LTE which probably is only up to Cat4 (150Mbps). Despite being positioned lower, it gets a larger 3,630mAh battery which is rated to last 30 hours with mixed use. As you would expect, both Moto Xs are running on the latest Android 5.1.1 Lollipop out of the box.

In terms of pricing, the top notch Moto X Play is going for 299 Pounds (about RM1,776) while the Moto X Style is priced from 359 Pounds (about RM2,132) in the UK. For the US, the Moto X Style that’s called the Pure Edition is priced from US$399.99 (about RM1,522) for the 16GB version. No word of its availability in Malaysia but hopefully the folks at Brightstar would give them a more reasonable price tag.
