MaxisGO offers 2GB data with bundled phone calls and SMS at RM48/month but there’s a catch

The mobile postpaid scene in Malaysia was shaken recently with affordable data plans from Digi, Celcom and U Mobile. In response to these affordable sub-RM40 plans, Maxis is now introducing its MaxisGO postpaid with 2GB of data at RM48/month. That’s not all as it also includes 100 minutes of calls and 100 SMS each month.

So is this better than its SurfMore 50 plan with 2GB/month? Wait until you read the fine lines.

For starters, the 2GB data quota is split into 2 buckets – 1GB which you can use for the whole day and another 1GB that’s restricted for off peak use between 2am – 7am. Strangely while you can sign up for the plan now, the off peak data is only available effective 30 July 2015. For the bundled 100 minutes calls and 100 SMS each month, it is applicable for all networks in Malaysia.

Another difference is the top up cost of data should you need more than just 1GB (all day). An extra 500MB costs RM38 and 1GB costs RM48, which is the price of the full subscription fee itself. As comparison, Maxis charges just RM15 per GB on its SurfMore plans. So if data is more important to you, you’re better off with their current SurfMore 50 plan.

In summary, this is for the light data users who need more calls and SMS than the average data-centric user. If you’re on SurfMore 50 plan, this makes sense if you make quite a significant number of calls and you hardly use 1GB of data each month. In addition, there’s no additional charge should you exceed your data allocation and you’re also entitled to enjoy RM38/day roaming at their supported 106 countries. For info, head over to MaxisGo postpaid page.
