The 1MDB (1Malaysia Development Bhd) issue has being in limelight lately and things got heaten up with the recent report published by the Wall Street Journal. With the on going legal action and investigations, the social space has been buzzing like crazy with hot juicy stories surrounding the issue.
Before you share such news on your Facebook or WhatsApp group, the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission) would like to remind you to stop spreading unverified info or else you’ll find yourself in some serious trouble.
According to its published reminder, it is an offence to spread unverified stories or manipulated photographs under the Communication and Multimedia Act 1998. If found guilty, one could be fined up to RM50,000 or/and thrown behind bars for a year. Like traditional media, social media users can be held accountable as well. It is always recommended to check on facts or stick to reliable sources before hitting that share or post button. Of course everybody knows that defamation is an offense but for MCMC to come out with such notice shows how critical the situation must have been right now.
