Micromax, which is seen to be the Indian answer to Xiaomi has just announced its new Canvas Sliver 5 smart phone. At 5.1mm thick, Micromax is claiming to have the World’s Thinnest Smart Phone beating the anorexic smart phone models from China.
How is this even possible considering the OPPO R5 and even the Vivo X5 Max have been boasting incredible slimness below 5mm?
For starters, the Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 gets an all flat design, similar to the Huawei P8 which has no protruding camera lens at the back. With the pursuit of being incredibly slim, most smart phones makers couldn’t shrink their camera modules further resulting an awkward bump at the corner. If measured on the thickness point, the OPPO R5 and Vivo X5 Max are said to be 6.9mm thick, which is similar to the iPhone 6’s dimensions.
With that in mind, Micromax claims to be the genuine holder of the thinnest title as the overall device is evenly slim at just 5.1mm. Surprisingly the closest competitor is the Gionee Elife S5.1 at 5.15mm, which was announced during MWC 2015.
Thinness aside, the Canvas Sliver 5 is quite an entry-level device. It gets a 4.8″ HD 720p AMOLED display with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor that’s mated to 2GB of RAM. There’s a decent 16GB of storage but unfortunately there’s no microSD expansion slot. For imaging, it settles for a Sony 8MP main camera while selfie duties are handled with a front 5MP camera. Packing just 2,000mAh which is pretty decent for its specs, the Canvas Sliver 5 is incredibly light at only 97 grams.
The Micromax Canvas Sliver 5 is priced at 17,999 INR (about RM1,045) and it will go on sale in India starting next month. This puts it within the similar price bracket as the Samsung Galaxy A5 and it also supports 4G LTE with a single SIM slot.
