Google wants you to save all your photos and videos to the cloud for free

We reported some time ago that Google was splitting up its services from Drive and now unlimited cloud storage for videos and photos is here in the form of Google Photos. Already available for Android, iOS and web users will be getting a taste of the app as they get launched.

The service will feature free unlimited storage that allows you to upload photos which will be stored at original quality up to 16 megapixels and videos up to Full HD 1080p. The app will also automatically backup images from your PC, tablet and smartphone. Apparently you will be able to upload images from your camera but this hasn’t yet been confirmed.

Google Photos will also be able to recognize faces with image recognition to help you search through your massive collection to find photos of the same people  and you will be able to make natural language searches using metadata that’s only for you to use. Last but not least Photo Assistant will be able to suggest tweaks to photos that you can edit, save or discard if you don’t want to do manual editing on your own.

Photos will be also easy to share and copy as users will be able send them to be viewed via web browser without the need for an additional app or registration. Hopefully the app will help relieve the burden on smartphone users that have limited or no expandable storage on their phones, or at the very least provide for an easy to access place for shutterbugs to upload all their images.
