Periscope is here for Android and it will change social broadcasting

Periscope, Twitter‘s live streaming app has made it’s way to Android after initially becoming available on iOS about two months ago. So far the app has been a major hit with the social media crowd, hitting one million users in ten days from launch.

Basically what the app allows you to do is it lets you watch and record live broadcasts straight from your smartphone and it looks like it will be a game changer when it comes to how we share live broadcasts.

When you open up the app, you get a list of current and recent broadcasts from people you are following and when you initially start up the app it will also suggest that you follow everyone that you are already following on Twitter. If nothing is happening on your feed, just swipe to show which broadcasts are currently available to watch. Swipe again and you’ll be presented with the most popular users on the app.

So far, the app has proven popular with both celebrities and media personalities but it also has been used to pirate pay per view like when thousands turned to social broadcast apps to watch the “Fight of the century” for free, giving pay TV operators some headache. Periscope has also been used for citizen journalism as well.

There are some differences between the iOS and Android versions of Periscope but the largest one is how you start your broadcast. On Android it’s a big red button on the broadcast screen while on iOS you will find it on the central tab. But generally the experience is about the same, letting you throw hearts and comments ala Instagram on broadcasts you like.

The app is currently available for download on Google Play and will run on any smartphone with Android 4.4 KitKat and up.
