After four months of work, XDA developer biktor_gj has managed to successfully load a working version of Android Wear into Samsung’s Galaxy Gear 2 smartwatch. This is great news for Gear users who would rather have Android on their devices, but the OS still has a long way to go in terms of workability as it’s still in a very rudimentary (albeit functional) state. This is proof that you can mount a different OS on your smartwatch than what it came it, though it looks like it will still take a fair bit of work to get it working.
So far only touch and basic Bluetooth support are functional, and other features like audio, motion sensor and the like would be difficult to implement as Android Wear isn’t open source like regular Android. Biktor_gj on the other hand is hopeful that he’ll get everything working up to scratch eventually.
