U Mobile unveils iPhone plans and U MicroCredit

U Mobile today has unveiled some interesting new plans for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. With its value for money proposition, U Mobile wants to make the iPhone more accessible to all. One of the new features is new financing option called U Microcredit, that lets you purchase the phones on installment with a subsidised plan.

Customers can now get the iPhone 6 starting from RM 98/month, as opposed to most plans from other telcos that require a hefty upfront payment and are essentially stuck to their plan for a set amount of time at minimum.

For U Mobile postpaid or prepaid users who purchase the smartphone with a credit card, there’s no upfront payment and if you want to cut loose you simply have to pay the remaining monthly installment of the phone and that’s it, because the way their new plans work is that you’re paying for the phone but getting a subsidised plan. If you terminate earlier, you’ll lose out on the potential savings from the monthly rebates that come with the plan.

It is also worth pointing out that U Mobile claims to offer the first subsidised iPhone bundling in Malaysia. The same contract free and zero upfront payment benefits also applies as well.

But unless you’re desperate, you’re gonna pay more for interest with MicroCredit. Assuming you get approved with the lowest 0.84% interest, it will cost RM98 for 30 months for the iPhone 6 16GB, which gives it a total cost of RM2940. That’s RM775 alone for interest. Also, there will be additional surcharges ranging from RM 60 to RM 90 depending on which MicroCredit plan you’ve chosen. We don’t recommend being committed so long just for a phone especially with this amount of interest.

Also, starting from March 19th, customers who sign up before June 30th with the i60 plans and above will get unlimited high speed internet without data quota caps but it’s not forever. The promo period will end either 30th June or 30th September depending on your plan.

Because of the change in pricing for the iPhone which occurred earlier this month, U Mobile plans have had a bit of a price revision as well, still costing a bit more than their old price plans due to the price increase and the coming GST costs, but the upfront payments still remain the same price.

But take note, the old pricing for the iPhone still applies but only to what limited stock they still have.

The new offerings will be available at all U Mobile stores starting 19th March 2015. For more information, visit U Mobile’s iPhone 6 page.
