Samsung Galaxy Tab A series announced

Following its new mid-range models like the Galaxy A, Samsung has just announced is new Galaxy Tab A tablet series. It was recently shown to the Russian media and there are 2 versions available – the Galaxy Tab A with a 8″ screen and a Galaxy Tab A Plus which comes with a full-sized 9.7″ screen.

Unlike the previous Galaxy Tablets, the new Galaxy Tab A uses a more squarish 4:3 display aspect ratio instead of a widescreen 16:9 format that’s better suited for watching videos. Resolution wise, it is quite low rate with 1024×768 pixels, which makes the Galaxy Tab A Plus having a similar display as the iPad 2 at 132ppi. Even a cheap RM599 device like the Honor Tablet could do 1280×800 resolution.

Powering both models is likely to be a 64-bit Quad-Core Snapdragon 410 unit that’s mated to 2GB on the Galaxy Tab A Plus and 1.5GB on the smaller Galaxy Tab A. On-board there’s 16GB of storage which can also be expanded with microSD up to 128GB.

Both models pack 5MP main + 2MP front cameras and they also come in either 4G LTE and WiFi only options. Out of the box it is reported to be running on the latest Android Lollipop with a more lightweight TouchWiz experience. The 8″ version has a 4,200mAh capacity battery while the bigger version naturally gets more at 6,000mAh. Design wise, it does look similar to its current flagship Galaxy Tab S but the Galaxy Tab A series is thicker at 7.5mm.

Both tablets will be going on sale next month in Russia with the Galaxy Tab A going from 16,990 Rubles (about RM1,014) while the Galaxy Tab A Plus starts at 20,990 Rubles (about RM1,253). That’s quite a lot to pay for a screen resolution this low and they better be priced lower if it goes on sale in Malaysia.
