Samsung Galaxy S6 Active with water and dust resistance is coming soon

The Samsung Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge are probably the best Android smart phones right now but it loses out in one area – water resistance. The previous model, the Galaxy S5 came with IP67 rated dust and water resistance but Samsung has decided to do away with it on the latest model for a more premium look and feel.

If you need a phone that you can take to the swimming pool, Samsung will be introducing its waterproof Galaxy S6 Active version very soon. Word has it that the rugged smart phone (SM-G890A) will make its debut soon on US operator AT&T. Spec-wise, it retains the same hardware under the hood, with a 5.1″ Quad HD display and a 14nm Exynos 7420 Octa-core processor that’s mated to 3GB of RAM. Its on-board storage is 32GB in capacity and it also gets a similar 16MP + 5MP cameras as its non-water resistant sibling.

Probably the biggest advantage would be its battery, which claims to be a larger 3,500mAh capacity unit. That’s almost 1,000mAh more than the normal Galaxy S6 (2,550mAh) and Galaxy S6 edge (2,600mAh). With its frugal processor and power efficient Universal Flash Storage, the Galaxy S6 Active could possibly last up to 2 days on a single charge.

Being an “active device”, the upcoming model would come with some rugged finishing to withstand the elements. As a result, it would be slightly thicker (8.8mm) than the 6.8mm side profile of its Galaxy S6. For a more practical experience, we hope Samsung would go with a flapless design for its microUSB port just like the HTC Butterfly 2 and recently announced Xperia M4 Aqua.
