Snapdragon 810 is cooler and Qualcomm has numbers to prove it

Qualcomm’s top end Snapdragon 810 processor is making its way to the latest flagship smart phones for 2015. That’s probably the case of most brands except for Samsung, which recently has dropped it in favour for its in-house developed Exynos processors. Samsung has alleged that the latest Snapdragon is having heat issues which Qualcomm has denied.

To refute its claims, Qualcomm has released a comparison test of a Snapdragon 801 powered device versus another smart phone that runs on the latest Snapdragon 810 processor. No doubt that the new processor is much more powerful but can it take the heat compared to last year’s flagships?

To compare its thermal efficiency, Qualcomm is measuring the “skin temperature”, which is taken off the surface of the device. The comparison is conducted in a room temperature of about 25°C. According to them, most smart phones would have a skin temperature limit of 45°C, which upon hitting would automatically slow down its processor performance to avoid further overheating.

In the first test, they ran Asphalt 8 game on both devices. After 20 minutes, the Snapdragon 801 unit has already reached its 45°C ceiling, while the Snapdragon 810 device is still going strong, hovering around the 40°C even after 30 minutes of running. This translate to cooler performance and there’s extra headroom in between its max temperature threshold.

Recording 4K videos are intensive as well and most flagship models would normally impose a 5 minute limit before a temperature warning pops up. True enough, the Snapdragon 801 device fires up quickly to 45°C after 5 minutes but surprisingly the newer Snapdragon 810 still soldiers on around a cool 35°C over the same duration. They didn’t show what happens beyond that but overall it is enough to show that the newer processor is much cooler than what you’ll get from 2014 flagship models.

So far these are just 2 comparisons within the Snapdragon family and we are more interested if they could compare it against other rival processors. At the moment, the Snapdragon 810 processor has been announced for the LG G Flex 2 and Xiaomi’s Mi Note Pro, and they expect other players such as OPPO, Sony, HTC, Motorola and Microsoft to join the list of Snapdragon 810 supported devices.
