The number of super-rich Chinese are rising and so is their demand for luxury goods. If the top of the line iPhone is considered too mainstream, here’s another luxury option for their consideration. The Hanmac New Defency is a luxury smart phone from France that’s designed for the affluent Chinese market.

Similar to Vertu, Hanmac prides itself with hand made craftsmanship and they claim to take about 30 days to make. The exterior appearance looks rather weird with an industrial design from the steam age. You can see a couple of design elements that replicate gears, trains and mechanical chains. For a premium feel, it uses high grade materials such as titanium, ceramic and the display is protected by scratch-resistant sapphire glass.

While it looks expensive on the exterior, the device is quite low grade on the inside. It gets a 3.5″ display that does a lowly 800×480 resolution and it runs on an entry-level 1.2GHz Quad-Core MediaTek 6589 prcessor with 2GB of RAM. Storage is quite generous with 64GB on-board and there’s also a 13MP main camera and a front facing 3MP shooter. Keeping the lights on is a rather small 1,440mAh capacity battery and it runs on a dated Android 4.2 Jelly bean.

For its starting price of 16,800 CNY (about RM9,574), this is quite a lot to pay for such specs and it could go up to 38,000 CNY (about RM21,600) with all the highest grade options included. This makes the Hanmac the most expensive MediaTek-powered device, which is usually associated with cost effective smart phones. If we have the money and are forced to pick a luxury device, the Vertu Aster looks more aesthetically pleasing and has better specs that’s acceptable for today’s standards.
