Watch out Project Ara, here comes another modular smart phone that’s looking pretty good. The Puzzlephone which is designed in Finland, offers an interchangeable approach which looks more aesthetically pleasing compared to the current prototypes we’ve seen for Project Ara. Like the Ara, it will be running on Android operating system.

The solution focuses on 3 key areas – The Spine which holds the main shell and display. The Brain which consists of its main processor, RAM and cameras. And lastly the heart which contains the battery and other secondary functions. The way they have separated the components is quite clever, for example the Spine is likely to last the longest as it holds the display and speakers. If the device feels slow, all you’ll need is to replace the brain for a performance bump.

The Puzzlephone is also open source for 3rd party vendors and developers to create compatible modules. Unlike Project Ara which has a huge permutation of combinations, the Puzzlephone is not only simpler but it looks elegant as well. Currently the device is still under development and they are aiming to be commercially ready by next year.
