WhatsApp has been in the news lately for its read receipts feature or better known as the Blue Ticks status. Now here’s something that would definitely put a smile on your face.
WhatsApp is now offering end to end encryption and it will be switched on by default with its upcoming Android app update. It uses Open Whisper Systems which apparently has the strongest encryption for text messages that claims to be better than Gmail and even Facebook Messenger.
The technique used is similar with TextSecure where your messages are kept safe from unauthorised users even if it gets intercepted in transit. With such encryption in place, there’s no way of decrypting by WhatsApp even if they are ordered to do so by the authorities.
This encryption feature is only applicable for Android and it isn’t clear when they would be rolling it out to other platforms including iOS.
